His championship run came to an end in 1914 when he was beaten by Australian, Norman. Brookes in three straight sets. Wilding died near Neuve Chapelle, France on 9 May 1915 while fighting in the Battle of Aubers Ridge. Date: 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
Anthony Frederick Wilding, the charismatic New Zealand tennis sensation, is seen here at the tender age of 22, being congratulated after an exhilarating victory over American opponent W.J. Clothier at the prestigious Wimbledon Championships in 1905. Wilding's triumph came despite losing the first two sets, showcasing his remarkable resilience and determination on the court. Though he would go on to win the championship three more times in 1910, 1911, and 1913, this early win marked the beginning of his meteoric rise in the world of tennis. Wilding, known for his tall, handsome, athletic build and genial demeanor, quickly became a beloved figure in the sporting world. His wins were celebrated with fervor, with ladies reportedly fainting from excitement and the rush of the crowd after his championship victories. However, his tennis career was cut short when he was defeated by Australian Norman Brookes in the 1914 championships. Tragically, Wilding's life was cut even shorter when he was killed in action near Neuve Chapelle, France on 9 May 1915 during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. Wilding's legacy as a champion tennis player and a brave soldier lives on, making him an enduring figure in both sports and military history.
