1562 Antoine Henri Husband Jeanne Navarre Vendome Albret
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Vendome, also known as Antoine de Vendome, Roi de Navarre (King of Navarre), in the year of his untimely death, 1562. Antoine was a significant figure in the complex and tumultuous political landscape of 16th-century Europe. He was the husband of Jeanne d'Albret, the reigning queen of Navarre, and the father of the future King Henry IV of France. Antoine was born in 1511, the third son of Charles, Duke of Bourbon, and his wife, Suzanne de Bourbon. He inherited the Duchy of Vendome from his elder brother, Louis, in 1548, and was subsequently granted the title Duke of Vendome. In 1555, he married Jeanne d'Albret, the heir to the throne of Navarre, in a bid to strengthen the Bourbon family's influence in the region. The marriage was a tumultuous one, with Jeanne's strong-willed nature clashing with Antoine's authoritarian tendencies. Their union produced three children, including the future King Henry IV, who would go on to unite the French crown and the Kingdom of Navarre. Antoine's reign as King of Navarre was marked by religious strife and political instability. He was a devout Catholic, while his wife and subjects were predominantly Protestant. This religious divide, coupled with the ongoing Wars of Religion in France, made for a volatile situation. Antoine's attempts to impose Catholicism on his subjects led to widespread rebellion and ultimately, his assassination in 1562. This portrait, with its solemn expression and regal attire, serves as a poignant reminder of Antoine de Vendome's brief but significant reign. His legacy as a political figure and a father continues to be studied by historians, as the complex web of alliances and conflicts that characterized the 16th century unfolds in the annals of history.
