18th Century Forehead Fronted Parakeet Parrot Perched Perching Psittacidae Psittaciformes Sauropsid Sauropsida Aratinga Manetti

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century illustration showcases the captivating beauty of the Scarlet-fronted Parakeet, Aratinga wagleri minor. The parakeet is perched gracefully on a lush, green branch, its vibrant plumage a striking contrast against the rich blue hues of the background. With a body length of approximately 13 centimeters, this parrot is a small member of the Aratinga genus, belonging to the larger parrot family, Psittacidae, and the order Psittaciformes, which includes over 350 species of parrots. The Scarlet-fronted Parakeet is easily recognizable by its distinctive red forehead, which gives it its name. Its predominantly green plumage is adorned with blue wings and a yellow beak. The long, curved beak is a characteristic feature of parrots, which they use for cracking open hard nuts and seeds, as well as for grasping and manipulating food. The illustration also reveals the intricate details of the parakeet's anatomy. Its eyes, with their dark irises and white sclera, are large and expressive, allowing the bird to have excellent depth perception and color vision. The parakeet's strong, muscular legs are shown in profile, revealing the powerful feet that enable it to grip branches and climb trees with ease. The Scarlet-fronted Parakeet is native to Central and South America, particularly in the dry forests of Brazil and Paraguay. It feeds primarily on fruits, seeds, and flowers, and is known to form large flocks. This illustration, created between 1723 and 1785, provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this beautiful and intriguing bird.
