EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Archibald Campbell, the 9th Earl of Argyll (1629-1685), a prominent figure in Scottish history during the 17th century. Born into the powerful Campbell clan, Argyll was a Highland chief and a staunch Royalist who played a significant role in the political landscape of Scotland during the turbulent times of the Civil Wars and the Restoration. The earl is depicted here in the grand attire of a Scottish nobleman, wearing a richly textured coat with intricate gold embroidery, a plaid kilt, and a high, powdered wig. The coat of arms on his chest proudly displays the Campbell family crest, a red hand holding a dagger, symbolizing the clan's motto, 'I will defend a right.' Argyll's political allegiance to the Crown is evident in this portrait, which was likely created during the Restoration period, following the execution of King Charles I in 1649. Argyll's loyalty to the monarchy led him to support the English forces during the Second English Civil War, and he was eventually captured and imprisoned for his efforts. However, he was eventually released and played a key role in the Restoration of the monarchy under King Charles II in 1660. Despite his political affiliations, Argyll faced numerous challenges throughout his life, including rebellions within his own clan and conflicts with other Scottish nobles. This portrait serves as a testament to his resilience and determination, as well as his commitment to the Scottish and English monarchies during a time of great upheaval.
