Armstrong Bomb Bombers Performance Secondflight Slow Target Whitley Whitworth Ponderous
EDITORS COMMENTS
The Armstrong Whitworth AW 38 Whitley V, a pivotal figure in the history of the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II, is depicted in this photograph. Despite its slow and ponderous performance, the Whitley holds a significant place in aviation history as the first RAF aircraft to bomb a German target. Manufactured by Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Limited, the Whitley was a British twin-engine, medium bomber that entered service with the RAF in 1937. Its introduction came at a time when the RAF was in dire need of a capable bomber to counter the growing threat from the German air force. The Whitley's primary role was to carry out night bombing raids against strategic targets in enemy territory. The Whitley V, as seen in this image, was an improved version of its predecessors, featuring more powerful engines and an extended range. However, its maximum speed of 185 miles per hour was relatively slow compared to modern bombers, making it an easy target for enemy fighters. Nevertheless, its sturdy construction and reliable performance made it a valuable asset to the RAF. On the night of August 2, 1939, a Whitley V from No. 3 Group, RAF Bomber Command, carried out the first bombing raid on a German target. The target was a railway bridge near the town of Wilhelmshaven, and the mission was a success, marking the beginning of the RAF's strategic bombing campaign against Germany. This photograph is a testament to the bravery and determination of the RAF personnel who flew these iconic aircraft during World War II. The Armstrong Whitworth AW 38 Whitley V may have been slow and ponderous, but its historical significance cannot be overstated.
