Alexandra Betrothed Glucksburg Gunther Heinrich Holstein Prussia Schleswig Sonderburg Viktor Wilhelm

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Prince August Wilhelm Heinrich Gunther Viktor of Prussia, affectionately known as "Auwi," is seen with his betrothed, Princess Alexandra Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg. The fourth son of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany, August Wilhelm was born on October 12, 1887, in Berlin, Germany. His future bride, Alexandra Victoria, was born on December 1, 1887, in Glücksburg Castle, Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark. Their engagement was announced on January 28, 1911, and the couple married on March 13, 1911, in Berlin. The union between the Prussian prince and the Danish princess was a significant one, as it strengthened the ties between the German and Danish royal families. August Wilhelm and Alexandra Victoria's wedding was a grand affair, with numerous European royals in attendance. The newlyweds were later crowned Duke and Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The photograph captures the young couple in a tender moment, gazing into each other's eyes with genuine affection. August Wilhelm's military uniform and Alexandra Victoria's elegant wedding gown add an air of regality to the image. Their marriage was short-lived, however, as August Wilhelm was killed in action during World War I on August 25, 1914. Alexandra Victoria went on to remarry, but she never forgot her first love. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a love story that was cut short by the ravages of war. It also highlights the complex web of royal connections that existed in Europe at the turn of the 20th century. The image is a valuable historical document, offering a glimpse into the lives of two young royals on the cusp of adulthood and the responsibilities that came with their titles.
