EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of the American Volunteer Group (AVG) pilots, a legendary squadron of brave aviators who defended China against Japanese aggression during World War II. Among the eight pilots depicted in the image are Alison, Hill, Baumler, Alber, John R, Mitchal, and Mack. Each man brought unique skills and experiences to the AVG, which became famous for its "Flying Tigers" insignia and its remarkable success in the skies over China. Alison, a former test pilot for Lockheed, flew the P-40B Tomahawk with distinction. Hill, a veteran of the Royal Air Force, brought valuable combat experience to the squadron. Baumler, a former barnstormer, was known for his daring aerial acrobatics. Alber, a former airline pilot, provided valuable transport experience. John R, a former racing driver, brought his speed and precision to the cockpit. Mitchal, a former crop duster, proved to be an effective ground attack pilot. And Mack, a former stunt pilot, was known for his fearless flying and quick reflexes. The AVG was formed in the summer of 1941, just weeks before the United States officially entered the war. These pilots, along with hundreds of other American volunteers, answered the call to defend China and help turn the tide against the Japanese. They flew a variety of aircraft, including the P-40B Tomahawk, P-43 Lancer, and P-35A Murphy. Their courage and determination helped to protect China's airspace and supply lines, and their legacy continues to inspire aviation enthusiasts and military history buffs around the world.
