EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1952, the Avro 698 Vulcan, registration number VX770, taxis at the Farnborough Airshow in England. The Avro Vulcan, a delta-winged jet-powered bomber, was a significant addition to the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Cold War era of the 1950s. The Avro Vulcan, designed by Avro and powered by two Rolls-Royce Conway turboprop engines, was a key component of the RAF's V-bomber force. With its distinctive delta wing design, the Vulcan was capable of reaching high subsonic speeds and had a maximum range of over 2,000 miles. The Avro Vulcan made its first flight on 30 August 1952, and this photograph captures it in its early stages, with other military aircraft parked behind, including a Hawker Siddeley HS.748 and a B.35 46. The Farnborough Airshow provided an opportunity for the public and military personnel to view the latest advancements in aviation technology. The Avro Vulcan played a crucial role in the RAF's strategic bombing capabilities during the Cold War, and this photograph serves as a reminder of the innovation and engineering prowess that defined the era. The Vulcan remained in service until 1984 and was retired after a distinguished career that included numerous records and accomplishments. This photograph, taken in 1952, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the Avro Vulcan as it taxied at the Farnborough Airshow, surrounded by other military aircraft, marking the beginning of its storied history in the Royal Air Force.
