The Betty, also known as the "Ju-Gō" or "Ju-Gō-San-Maru" in Japanese, was a twin-engined, piston-propelled attack bomber produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Developed in the late 1930s, the Betty made its first flight in 1938 and entered service in 1940. It was a formidable aircraft for its time, with a maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour and a range of over 2,000 kilometers. The Betty was heavily armed, carrying up to 2,000 kilograms of bombs or torpedoes, making it a potent weapon against Allied shipping and land targets. The Betty saw extensive action throughout the Pacific Theater of World War II, participating in numerous bombing raids against Allied targets in the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. Its long range and heavy payload made it a valuable asset for the Japanese military, particularly during the early stages of the war when the Imperial Japanese Navy was able to control much of the Pacific. Despite its strengths, the Betty was not without its weaknesses. Its thick, armored skin made it a target for Allied fighter planes, and its lack of defensive armament made it vulnerable during low-altitude attacks. Nevertheless, the Betty remained in service until the end of the war, serving as a reminder of the technological prowess and determination of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service.
