EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite illustration is a depiction of Babiana ringens, commonly known as the Rat's Tail Babiana, taken from the hortus botanicus of the Medici family in Amsterdam as published in Plantarum Horti Medici Amstelodamensis by Caspar Commelin in 1706. The Babiana ringens is a bulbous perennial plant belonging to the Iridaceae family, native to South Africa. This botanical masterpiece was one of the many plants documented during the 18th century, a time of significant advancement in the field of botany. The illustration is attributed to Carl Linnaeus, the renowned Swedish botanist, zoologist, and taxonomist, who is considered the father of modern taxonomy. Linnaeus named many plants during this period, including the Babiana ringens, which he classified under the order Angiospermae, class Magnoliophyta, and family Iridaceae. The Rat's Tail Babiana is named for its distinctive inflorescence, which resembles a rat's tail. The plant produces funnel-shaped flowers that range in color from pink to purple and are borne on long, slender peduncles. The plant's bulb is globose and covered with a membranous sheath. This illustration is a testament to the meticulous work of both Commelin and Linnaeus, who dedicated their lives to documenting and classifying the natural world. The Rat's Tail Babiana remains an intriguing and beautiful addition to the world of flowering plants, with its unique appearance and fascinating history.
