EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, three Battenberg princes, each resplendent in their adopted country's military uniforms, stand proudly during the tumultuous period of the First World War. From left to right, we see HSH Prince Louis of Battenberg, the First Sea Lord of the British Royal Navy, HH Prince Leopold, and HH Prince Maurice. All three were members of the Austrian-German Battenberg family, who had found refuge in Britain following political upheaval in Europe. Prince Louis, a former First Sea Lord and Admiral of the Fleet, had been forced to renounce his titles and leave Britain in 1914 due to anti-German sentiment. However, his expertise and service to the British navy were invaluable, and he was later reinstated in 1912. In the photograph, he wears the uniform of a British admiral, signifying his unwavering loyalty to his adopted homeland. Beside him stands HH Prince Leopold, who served with the 1st Kings Royal Rifles as a captain. His military career began when he joined the British Army in 1903. In the photograph, he is seen wearing the uniform of a British army officer, complete with campaign medals adorning his chest. At the bottom right of the image, HH Prince Maurice can be seen in the uniform of a British artillery officer. He had also served in the British Army since 1903 and saw action during the Boer War. During the First World War, he served with the 1st King's Royal Rifle Corps. The photograph captures a poignant moment in history, as these three princes, once part of the Austrian imperial family, stood side by side in the British military, demonstrating their commitment to their adopted country during a time of great conflict.
