Advance Arras Battery Chapel Feuchy Firing Guns Pounder Pounders Sixty Weapon Weapons Ww 1

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the raw power and intensity of the Battle of Arras, one of the major engagements of World War I on the Western Front in France. Taken during the first day of the offensive in April 1917, the image depicts a battery of 60-pounder guns in action at Feuchy Chapel, located 3.75 miles from Arras and marking the limit of the initial advance. The Great War, as it was then known, saw the employment of some of the most advanced and devastating weapons of the time. The 60-pounder gun, a heavy artillery piece, was a formidable weapon capable of firing a 102.7 kg (226 lb) shell over a distance of 7,620 meters (8,310 yards). In this photograph, we see the gunners expertly manning their weapons, preparing to unleash another barrage against the enemy lines. The Battle of Arras was a significant turning point in the war, with the British and French forces making substantial gains against the German positions. However, the offensive came at a great cost, with over 160,000 casualties sustained by the Allied forces. This historical image offers a poignant reminder of the immense sacrifices made by the soldiers involved in the conflict and the destructive power of the weapons used during World War I. The Feuchy Chapel, now a symbol of the bravery and determination of the troops, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of this pivotal moment in world history.
