EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the damage inflicted on a magnificent mansion on Knez Mihailova Street in Belgrade, Serbia, during the early days of World War I. The image dates back to July or August 1914, a time when the city was under relentless bombardment from Austrian Monitor Boats stationed on the Danube and Sava Rivers. Knez Mihailova Street, now a bustling pedestrian and shopping zone, was once home to numerous ornate mansions and buildings, many of which were constructed during the late 1870s. The mansion in this photograph, bearing the brunt of a direct shell hit, is a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of war on the city's architectural heritage. The mansion, named after Prince Mihailo Obrenovic III, features a grand frontage with a balcony that once offered panoramic views of the city. The once proud edifice now lies in ruins, its once pristine facade reduced to a pile of rubble and bricks. The hole in the wall, caused by the shell, is a stark reminder of the violence and destruction that engulfed Belgrade during those tumultuous months. The Austrian Monitor Boats, powerful weapons of war, were responsible for the extensive damage to the city. Their shells tore through the streets of Belgrade, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, a testament to the resilience of the people of Belgrade, and a reminder of the devastating consequences of war.
