This striking print captures the likeness of Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bessières, Duke of Istrie, a prominent military figure during the Napoleonic Wars. Born in 1768 in Montauban, France, Bessières rose through the ranks to become Colonel General of the Cavalry of the Imperial Guard. His military career began in earnest during the French Revolution, where he distinguished himself in several battles, including the Battle of Fleurus in 1794. Bessières' talents as a cavalry commander were unmatched, and he earned the moniker "Le Vieux Tige" or "Old Stick," a reference to his ability to keep his troops in line and focused on the battlefield. He was a key figure in many of Napoleon Bonaparte's victories, including Austerlitz in 1805 and Wagram in 1809. Despite his loyalty to Napoleon, Bessières was not above voicing his opinions and even refused to support some of the Emperor's more questionable decisions. However, his military prowess and reputation kept him in favor with the French military leadership. Bessières' final years were marked by a series of military defeats, including the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 and the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He died on July 12, 1815, just days after the latter battle. This print, created during Bessières' lifetime, serves as a testament to his military accomplishments and enduring legacy as one of France's greatest cavalry commanders.
