13th Bishop Bishops Carson Drama Dramatic Garrick Hobbes Move Murray Oliver Organ Slumped Stool Vestments 1902

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Bishops Move" is a captivating theatrical production by John Oliver Hobbes and Murray Carson, first brought to life at the prestigious Garrick Theatre on the 7th of June in 1902 for a single performance. The play was later revived on the 13th of July in 1903. This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment from the production, with two bishops in their rich red vestments, deep in conversation. The older bishop, with a look of intense concentration, has inadvertently caused his chair to slip, leaving him in a state of surprise as he slumps onto the organ stool. A pretty young girl, perhaps a member of the chorus or a member of the clergy, watches the scene unfold with a mixture of amusement and concern. The dramatic setting of the theatre, with its ornate decor and dimly lit stage, adds to the sense of intrigue and entertainment. John Oliver Hobbes and Murray Carson were renowned playwrights of their time, and "The Bishops Move" is considered one of their most intriguing works. The play explores the complexities of power, faith, and human relationships within the context of the Church, making for a thought-provoking and engaging theatrical experience. This photograph is a rare glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the world of early 20th century theatre and the captivating productions that graced the stages of London's most prestigious venues.
