This historic photograph, taken on March 22, 1894, captures a significant moment in the political landscape of Europe as German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898) is warmly welcomed by Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941) during a state visit to the German Imperial Palace in Berlin. The handshake between the two men, depicted on this print from Mary Evans Picture Library (Page 39), marked a turning point in their relationship, which had been strained due to Bismarck's liberal political leanings and Wilhelm's desire for a more authoritarian rule.
