This striking image captures the moment of the explosive destruction of the HMS Royal George, a formidable warship of the British Royal Navy, in Woolwich Dockyard in 1782. The HMS Royal George, a 100-gun first rate ship of the line, had been anchored in Portsmouth Harbour since 1756, undergoing extensive maintenance and repairs.
