EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment soldiers wade ashore from a landing craft during the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. One of fourteen scenes documented on board the landing craft, this image was captured in the Ouistreham and Bernieres sector of the St. Aubin area. Part of a collection of one hundred and two photographs, this photograph was photographed and collected by A.D.C. Smith, who served with the Army Commandos during World War Two. The photographs were mounted on leaves from an album, with nine of them loose. This poignant image is associated with the pivotal Operation Overlord and the D-Day landings, which marked the beginning of the end of the war in Europe. The photograph offers a unique glimpse into the bravery and determination of the soldiers as they faced the unknown, wading through the water towards the shores of Normandy. The photograph is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during this historic event.
