This Weeks Studdy - Bonzos Winter Sport

Several Bonzo dogs sledging with calamitous results. George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Studdy also produced a large body of work for the Sketch before and after Bonzo including his later creation, Ooloo the cat. His early cartoon dogs were simply known as the Studdy Dog until readers demanded a name and Bruce Ingram, the ILN editor, suggested his immortal moniker. EDITORS COMMENTS
"This print showcases a chaotic scene from the world of Bonzo, the beloved small dog creation of British cartoonist George Ernest Studdy. In this wintery tableau, several Bonzo dogs are seen enthusiastically sledging down a snowy slope, their saucer-like eyes filled with excitement and anticipation. However, the results of their winter sport are far from ideal, as one sled has crashed into a tree, another is careening off course, and a third is being overturned by its occupants. Studdy first introduced Bonzo to the world in 1922 through his cartoons in The Sketch, and the character quickly became a global sensation. Bonzo mania spread far and wide, resulting in an avalanche of merchandise including postcards, annuals, toys, and other collectibles. The artist's early cartoon dogs were simply known as the Studdy Dog, but readers clamored for a name, and Bruce Ingram, the editor of the Illustrated London News, suggested the immortal moniker 'Bonzo.' Studdy's artistic talent extended beyond Bonzo, and he produced a vast body of work for The Sketch both before and after the canine sensation. One of his later creations was Ooloo the cat, who also captured the hearts of the public. This print is a testament to Studdy's mastery of capturing the humor and chaos of everyday life, making it a must-have for anyone with an appreciation for the history of cartoon art and the calamitous results of winter sports."
