Boys having fun during Medway floods, Kent

A group of boys having fun on their way home from school after the River Medway overflowed its banks. All along the Upper Medway Valleys from Maidstone to Tunbridge, and up to its source at Forest Row, on the Sussex side of Tunbridge Wells, hundreds of acres of agricultural land was under water. The town of Tonbridge was flooded, and the High Street was like a miniature canal. In several of the cottages the water rose to the upper storeys, and a third of the town was flooded.

Banks Flood Flooded Flooding Maidstone Medway School Boys Splash Splashing Terrace Terraced Tonbridge Tunbridge Wells

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Joyful Moment Amidst the Chaos: Boys Splashing in the Flooded Streets of Tonbridge, Kent, 1911 Amidst the devastating floods that hit the Upper Medway Valleys in Kent and Sussex in 1911, hundreds of acres of agricultural land were submerged, and towns like Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells were left in a state of crisis. The River Medway had overflowed its banks, turning the High Street of Tonbridge into a miniature canal. In several cottages, the water reached the upper storeys, and a third of the town was flooded. Despite the overwhelming situation, a group of school boys couldn't help but find joy in the unusual circumstances as they made their way home from school. The boys, dressed in their uniforms, splash and laugh in the flooded street, creating ripples in the water that reflects the terraced houses and the grey sky above. The image captures a moment of pure fun and carefree spirit amidst the chaos and destruction caused by the floods. The photograph, taken from The Pete Frost Collection at Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, reminding us of the resilience and adaptability of the human spirit even in the most challenging of circumstances.
