Brigadier Rosecrans

EDITORS COMMENTS
Brigadier-General William Starke Rosecrans (1819-1898) was a distinguished Union army officer during the American Civil War, best known for his leadership in the Western Theater. This striking portrait captures the intense and focused gaze of Rosecrans, reflecting his strategic mind and unwavering determination. Born in Delaware, Ohio, Rosecrans graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1842. He served in various assignments in the Mexican-American War before resigning from the army in 1854 to pursue a career in civil engineering. However, the outbreak of the Civil War saw him returning to military service in 1861. Rosecrans rose through the ranks quickly, earning the brevet rank of major general for his actions at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. He went on to command the Army of the Cumberland, leading it to a decisive victory against Confederate General Braxton Bragg at the Battle of Murfreesboro in December 1862. This victory solidified Rosecrans' reputation as a capable commander and earned him the nickname "Old Rosy." Despite his successes, Rosecrans' tenure as commander of the Army of the Cumberland was not without controversy. He was relieved of command after a series of setbacks in the fall of 1863, including the defeat at Chickamauga. However, he continued to serve in various capacities throughout the war, eventually retiring from the army in 1866. This portrait, taken during the height of Rosecrans' military career, captures the essence of a man who dedicated himself to the service of his country during its most tumultuous period. The intricately detailed uniform and the strong, confident pose convey a sense of authority and leadership that made Rosecrans a respected figure in American military history.
