Dated to 1370, this exquisite diptych is a masterpiece of Byzantine art that now resides in the Diocesan Museum of Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Measuring approximately 17.5 cm x 12.5 cm, the Reliquary of the Holy Despots is a remarkable example of the fusion of Byzantine and Spanish artistic traditions. The outer casing is made of embossed silver, intricately adorned with geometric patterns and floral motifs, while the inner panels are covered in encaustic, a painting technique using heated beeswax.
