EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in this evocative photograph is Captain William Avery "Billy" Bishop (1894-1956), a Canadian air ace who became the top-scoring fighter pilot in the British Royal Flying Corps (RFC) during the First World War. Bishop's daring exploits in the skies above Europe earned him the distinction of shooting down 72 enemy aircraft, a record that would stand for over 50 years. The image shows Bishop in the cockpit of his No. 60 Squadron RFC Nieuport 17, serial no. B 1556. Dressed in his flying gear, with goggles perched on his forehead and a determined expression on his face, Bishop appears poised for action. The Nieuport 17, a French-designed single-seat fighter plane, was one of the most effective aircraft of the war, and its distinctive silhouette became synonymous with the heroism and courage of the RFC pilots. This photograph was likely taken during the period of 1917 to 1918, when Bishop was at the height of his military career. Despite the danger and uncertainty of wartime aviation, Bishop's skill and bravery shone through, earning him numerous decorations and accolades. His achievements during the war helped to establish the Canadian military as a formidable force and inspired a generation of aviators. Bishop's legacy as a Canadian hero extends beyond his military service. After the war, he became an advocate for aviation safety and played a key role in the development of the Canadian aviation industry. His story is a testament to the courage and determination of the men and women who served during the First World War, and a reminder of the important role that aviation continues to play in our lives today.
