Adults Captured Deck Exhibit Exhibited Postwar Submarine Surrendered Visitor Visitors

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment in history as visitors explore the deck of the surrendered German submarine UC-97, which gave in to the USA in November 1918. Launched in March 1918, this formidable vessel, a Type IIB U-boat, was one of the last to be commissioned by the German Navy before the end of World War I. After the armistice, the U.S. Navy took possession of UC-97 as a war trophy and brought it to the United States to be exhibited as a symbol of victory. During the exhibition phase, which is believed to have taken place around 1920, this submarine became a popular attraction, drawing large crowds of curious adults and children. Visitors were given the rare opportunity to step aboard the submarine and get a firsthand look at the inner workings of this impressive machine of war. The exhibition tour helped to raise funds for Victory Bonds, further fueling the post-war spirit of unity and patriotism. The UC-97, a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the German military, was eventually sunk as a target in Lake Michigan in June 1921. This photograph, however, immortalizes a brief but significant period in history when this captured German submarine served as a symbol of victory and a source of fascination for the American public.
