Carl Christian, Count of Nassau-Weilburg (1735-1788): A Dutch Military Commander of the Eighteenth Century This striking portrait captures the likeness of Carl Christian, Count of Nassau-Weilburg (1735-1788), a prominent Dutch military commander during the eighteenth century. Born into the esteemed House of Nassau, Carl Christian assumed the title of Count of Nassau-Weilburg upon the death of his father in 1737. He was raised in the military tradition, and his education and training prepared him for a career in the armed forces. During his military career, Carl Christian served in various capacities, including as a colonel in the Dutch army and as a general in the army of the Elector of Trier. In 1761, he was appointed Governor of the Dutch province of Overijssel and Commander-in-Chief of the Dutch army.
