EDITORS COMMENTS
Carlos I of Portugal, a plump monarch with a distinguished military background, is depicted in this historic photograph taken during his reign from 1889 to 1908. The King, dressed in his full regalia, stands confidently with one hand resting on the hilt of his sword and the other hand holding the collar of his Order of the Tower and Sword. The image captures the grandeur and majesty of the Portuguese monarchy during this era. Carlos I was born on May 28, 1863, and ascended to the throne following the death of his father, King Luis I. He was a popular figure among the Portuguese military, having served as a colonel in the Portuguese Army before his accession. The King's reign was marked by several significant events, including the establishment of the First Republic of Portugal in 1891, which was short-lived, and the colonization of Angola and Mozambique. However, Carlos I's reign was also marred by political instability and economic hardships. The King's autocratic rule and his support for the Catholic Church led to growing discontent among the populace. On February 1, 1908, Carlos I was assassinated along with his son, Prince Luis Filipe, in Lisbon. The assassination marked the end of the Portuguese monarchy and paved the way for the establishment of the First Republic. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex history of Portugal during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The King's military uniform, with its intricate buttons and gold braid, adds to the regal and historic feel of the image. The image of Carlos I, standing proudly with his sword, is a testament to his military background and his role as a monarch during a tumultuous period in Portuguese history.
