The humble cottage where Andrew Carnegie, the renowned industrialist, philanthropist, and business magnate, was born, is nestled in the heart of this historic town. Carnegie's birthplace cottage was acquired by him in 1895 and was subsequently let out to tenants. Following the death of Carnegie's wife, Louise Whitfield Carnegie, in 1924, she proposed and funded the construction of a Memorial Treasure House adjoining the Birthplace.
