EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration by Jo Konopelko brings to life the enigmatic Carnotaurus, an extinct dinosaur that roamed the South American continent during the Lower Cretaceous period, around 70 million years ago. Fossil evidence of this carnivorous dinosaur has been discovered in Argentina, providing valuable insights into its unique anatomy. Belonging to the larger group of Archosauria, Carnotaurus is classified as a Ceratosaurian, a subgroup of theropod dinosaurs characterized by their hollow bones, bipedal stance, and advanced brain structure. More specifically, Carnotaurus is a member of the Abelisauroidea family, which includes other notable dinosaurs such as Majungasaurus and Rugops. The Carnotaurus is distinguished by its distinctive crest, which is thought to have functioned as a display structure or for thermoregulation. Its skeletal remains suggest that it was a medium-sized dinosaur, measuring around 9 meters in length and weighing approximately 1.5 tons. Its dentition consisted of serrated teeth, which were ideal for slicing through flesh. Despite the numerous discoveries of dinosaur fossils in the Mesozoic Era, the Carnotaurus remains a fascinating enigma, offering a glimpse into the diverse and complex world of dinosaur anatomy during the Cretaceous period. Jo Konopelko's illustration masterfully captures the essence of this extinct predator, inviting us to imagine the South American landscape teeming with life during the age of the dinosaurs.
