EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the intriguing moment between two prominent figures of the Victorian music world: composer and conductor Jules Rivière (1819-1900) and classical singer and conductor Georgina Weldon (1837-1914). The image, taken in 1879, is a poignant reminder of a bitter conflict that unfolded between these two individuals a year earlier. At the heart of the controversy was a libel case instigated by Rivière against Weldon, which unfolded at the Old Bailey in London. The dispute arose from an incident during a performance of Rivière's opera, "Entracte," at the Royal Albert Hall in 1878. During the performance, Weldon, who was conducting the orchestra, allegedly made derogatory comments about Rivière's music. The incident escalated into a heated exchange between the two, with Weldon reportedly making further disparaging remarks about Rivière in the press. Rivière, who was a respected figure in the music world, was deeply offended and took legal action against Weldon. The case garnered significant attention, with many in the musical community taking sides. Despite the controversy, Weldon was found guilty of libel and spent a month in Newgate Prison. This photograph, taken after her release, shows the two musicians in a more peaceful setting, with Rivière appearing as the victor in their hostile encounter. The image serves as a reminder of the high stakes and intense passions that could surround artistic disputes during the Victorian era.
