EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Catherine Macaulay Graham, a remarkable historical figure of the 18th century. Born Catherine Sawbridge in 1731, she would later become the wife of both George Macaulay and William Graham. Her first marriage to George Macaulay, a Scottish surgeon, produced two children, but ended in tragedy when he passed away in 1766. Following her husband's death, Catherine turned to writing as a means of support and self-expression. Her groundbreaking work, "The History of England from the Accession of James II," published in 1767, established her as a leading historian and intellectual of her time. Her innovative approach to history, which emphasized the role of individual actions and moral principles, challenged the traditional narrative of English history. In 1770, Catherine married William Graham, a Scottish lawyer and politician, with whom she had two more children. Despite her new marriage, she continued to write and publish, contributing to several influential historical works. Her dedication to her craft and her innovative perspective earned her a reputation as a trailblazing historian. This portrait, likely taken during her second marriage, showcases Catherine Macaulay Graham's intelligence, determination, and grace. Her piercing gaze and elegant attire reflect her status as a woman of substance and accomplishment. Catherine Macaulay Graham's legacy as a historian and writer continues to inspire scholars and history enthusiasts alike, making this portrait a valuable and intriguing glimpse into the life of an extraordinary woman.
