EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic beauty of Catherine Christine Boyer, better known as Catherine Bonaparte, Princess of Canino. Born in 1773, she was the daughter of Pierre Andre Boyer, a French lawyer, and his first wife, Marie Madeleine Hippolyte Dermoncourt. Catherine's life was marked by tragedy and intrigue, as she became the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte's elder brother, Lucien Bonaparte, in 1800. Lucien, a military officer and politician, was known for his charisma and ambition. He was a key figure in the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte and played a significant role in the French Revolution. Catherine, with her striking features and refined elegance, was an ideal match for Lucien, and their marriage was celebrated in Parisian society. However, Catherine's life was cut tragically short. She died at the young age of 27, just a few months after giving birth to their only child, a son named Napoleon Louis Bonaparte. The exact cause of her death is not known, but rumors of poisoning circulated, fueling intrigue and speculation. Despite her untimely death, Catherine's legacy lived on. She was remembered as a beautiful and gracious woman, and her son went on to become a prominent figure in his own right, serving as King of Holland from 1806 to 1810. This hauntingly beautiful portrait, taken around the time of her marriage to Lucien, captures the essence of Catherine's enigmatic charm and serves as a poignant reminder of the brief but significant life of this tragic figure in French history.
