EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 27: Centropus sinensis, the Greater Coucal (Pieter Cornelis de Bevere, from the Loten Collection of Coloured Drawings of Birds, Mammals, Insects & Plants, c. 1754-57) The Greater Coucal (Centropus sinensis), depicted in this exquisite 18th-century illustration by Pieter Cornelis de Bevere, is a striking bird belonging to the cuckoo family (Cuculidae) and the order Cuculiformes. The Greater Coucal is native to the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. De Bevere's masterful painting captures the bird's distinctive anatomy, with its long, curved beak, brown plumage, and piercing, yellow eyes. The Greater Coucal is perched gracefully on a branch, its body curved in a way that accentuates its slender form and elongated tail. The artist's attention to detail is evident in the intricately rendered feathers, the textured bark of the branch, and the subtle shading that adds depth and dimension to the image. This illustration is part of the Loten Collection of Coloured Drawings of Birds, Mammals, Insects & Plants, which was compiled by Joan Gideon Loten (1710-1781) and his son, also named Joan Loten (1745-1810). The collection is renowned for its high-quality illustrations of natural history specimens, produced during the height of the Age of Enlightenment. Pieter Cornelis de Bevere (1710-1789) was a Flemish artist who specialized in natural history illustrations. His works were widely distributed through the publication of books and collections like the Loten Collection. De Bevere's meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects made him a favorite among naturalists and collectors of the time.
