1931 Argyll Blues Brothers Duchess Golf Golfer Golfers Margaret Oxford Sportsmen Sweeny University Whigham

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black-and-white photograph, we find ourselves transported back in time to the early 1930s, where we encounter two dashing young American brothers, Charles Sweeny (right) and Robert Sweeny, proudly donning their golfing attire for Oxford University. The brothers, both accomplished athletes, were members of the prestigious Oxford University Golf Club's "Blues" team, a designation reserved for the best amateur sportsmen of the university. Charles Sweeny, the elder brother, would go on to make headlines in the social world when he married the enchanting Margaret Whigham in 1933. Margaret, a scion of a prominent Scottish aristocratic family, would later become the Duchess of Argyll. The couple's lavish wedding was a society event of the highest order, attended by royalty and high-ranking nobility from both sides of the Atlantic. Robert Sweeny, the younger brother, also enjoyed a successful career in business and finance, but his passion for golf never waned. The brothers' shared love for the sport not only brought them success on the golf course but also forged a lifelong bond between them. This evocative portrait, taken in 1931, captures the brothers in their prime, exuding confidence and charm as they stand side by side, their golf clubs at their feet. The photograph is a testament to their athletic prowess and the camaraderie that exists between brothers, as well as a glimpse into a bygone era of society, sports, and elegance.
