EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time at the Children's Home on the Moor in Edgworth, Lancashire, established in 1872 by the Methodist minister Thomas Bowman Stephenson. The Home, which was the first National Children's Home, later became known as Crowthorn Special Needs Residential School and closed in 2002. The image, set in the early 1900s, depicts several children and staff members gathered around a horse and trap. During this period, the Home provided shelter, education, and care for children in need, often those who were orphaned, abandoned, or unable to live with their families due to poverty. The horse and trap were essential modes of transportation for the Home, enabling the children to attend school and the staff to carry out their duties. The photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of the Children's Home during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, a time when workhouses and poverty were prevalent in many communities. The image is a poignant reminder of the important role that Thomas Bowman Stephenson and the Children's Home on the Moor played in the lives of countless children throughout history.
