EDITORS COMMENTS
This lantern slide depicts The Ha-Ta-Men, one of the Great Gates of Peking (Beijing), also known as Chongwenmen Gate. Popularly named after the Mongol Prince Hata, who resided in a nearby palace, this gate was a significant part of the city's former wall in the southeastern sector. The Ha-Ta-Men served as an essential entry point into the ancient city, standing tall and proud for centuries. The image captures the intricate details of the gate, with its ornate decorations and intriguing history. The Ha-Ta-Men was torn down in the 1960s to make way for Beijing's Second Ring Road, marking the end of an era and a loss to the city's rich cultural heritage. The late 19th century, circa 1890s, setting of this photograph showcases the gate in its historical context, offering a glimpse into the past. The Ha-Ta-Men, with its Mongol influence, is a testament to the diverse cultural influences that shaped Peking (Beijing) throughout history. This lantern slide is an essential addition to any collection of historical images of China and its architectural wonders.
