1872 Cineraria Dombrain Honywood Hybrid Purple Standish Worthington Smith

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored lithograph showcases two beautiful varieties of Cineraria hybrids: the Purple Lady Kilmorey and the black and purple John Standish. The image was drawn and lithographed by the talented Worthington G. Smith, an architect, engraver, and mycologist, for the Floral Magazine in 1872. Smith was also a regular contributor to The Gardeners Chronicle. The Floral Magazine was edited at the time by the reverend Henry Honywood Dombrain (1818-1905), a clergyman and gardener. Dombrain was known for his expertise in horticulture and his passion for sharing knowledge about new and exotic plants with the public. The Purple Lady Kilmorey Cineraria is a popular variety, characterized by its rich purple leaves and white flowers with purple veins. The black and purple John Standish Cineraria, on the other hand, boasts deep purple-black leaves and dark purple flowers with white centers. Both varieties were prized for their ornamental value in Victorian gardens. This exquisite botanical illustration offers a glimpse into the horticultural world of the late 19th century, showcasing the beauty and diversity of Cineraria hybrids. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the lithograph are a testament to the skill and artistry of Worthington G. Smith and the dedication of Henry Honywood Dombrain to documenting and sharing the wonders of the natural world.
