EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving showcases the vibrant plumage and distinctive broad bill of the Cinnamon Roller, also known as the Broad-billed Roller or the African Roller (Eurystomus glaucurus). The illustration was drawn and engraved by the skilled hands of Richard Polydore Nodder and published in George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany in London, 1800. The Cinnamon Roller is a native of sub-Saharan Africa and is a member of the roller family, Coraciidae. They are known for their distinctive appearance, with iridescent green and purple plumage on their back, wings, and tail, contrasting with their cinnamon-colored underparts. Their most striking feature, however, is their large, curved, and brightly colored bill, which is used to probe for insects and other invertebrates in the ground. Rollers are agile birds that are often seen perched on branches or flying low over open grasslands and savannas. They are social birds that form large flocks outside of the breeding season, and they are known for their acrobatic flight and distinctive call. The Cinnamon Roller is an important species in African ecosystems, as they help control insect populations and play a role in the food chain as both predators and prey. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the natural history artistry of the past, providing a glimpse into the natural world of over two centuries ago. It is a reminder of the importance of documenting and preserving the natural world for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
