EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 1: Circus melanoleucos, or the Pied Harrier, beautifully depicted in this 18th-century painting by Pieter Cornelis de Bevere (1710-1789). This illustration is part of the Loten Collection of coloured drawings of Birds, Mammals, Insects & Plants, created between 1754 and 1757. The Pied Harrier, a member of the Accipitridae family and the order Accipitriformes, is a bird of prey native to Africa and southern Europe. The bird is shown perched gracefully on a long, gnarled branch, its piercing gaze fixed intently on some unseen prey. The Pied Harrier's distinctive plumage, with its white underparts and black and white stripes on its upperparts, is on full display. Its long, hooked beak and powerful talons are also clearly visible, revealing the bird's predatory nature. This exquisite illustration showcases the intricate anatomy of the Pied Harrier, with its feathers rendered in meticulous detail. The artist, Pieter Cornelis de Bevere, was a renowned Dutch naturalist and artist, known for his accurate and detailed depictions of animals. His work was highly regarded during his time and continues to be appreciated by naturalists, ornithologists, and art lovers today. The Pied Harrier is a sauropsida, a group of animals that includes reptiles and birds, and is part of the avian class Aves. It is a versatile hunter, able to prey on a variety of animals, including rodents, reptiles, and even other birds. Its agility and stealth make it a formidable predator in its natural habitat. This stunning illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, captured in exquisite detail by a masterful artist. It invites us to appreciate the intricacies of the natural world and to marvel at the wonder of creation.
