Claude Delinges, a French Jesuit churchman, is depicted in this striking image from the year 1590, when he was in his 52nd year. Delinges (also spelled Delingendes) was a prominent figure in the Jesuit Order during the late 16th century, a time of great turmoil and change in the Catholic Church. Born in France around 1538, Delinges joined the Jesuits in 1556 and quickly distinguished himself as a talented educator and theologian. He served as a professor of theology at the Jesuit college in La Flèche, where he taught future leaders of the Church and the French monarchy. Delinges also played a key role in the Jesuit mission to convert the people of Paraguay in South America, where he spent several years as a missionary. Despite his many accomplishments, Delinges faced numerous challenges during his career. He was a vocal critic of the Protestant Reformation and the religious wars that ravaged Europe during this period. Delinges also clashed with some of his fellow Jesuits over theological issues, leading to heated debates and even public disputes. Despite these challenges, Delinges remained a dedicated and influential figure in the Jesuit Order. He continued to write and teach, producing numerous works on theology, education, and the spiritual life. Delinges also served as a counselor to several popes and played a key role in the Council of Trent, which helped to reform the Catholic Church and strengthen its position against the Protestant challenge.
