Adrian Beck Bethell Clarissa Debs Debutante Debutantes Lionel Major Tennant Tennyson

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white portrait, Clarissa Tennant, later known as Mrs. James Beck, is captured in a moment of quiet reflection as she gazes into the flickering flames of a fireplace. Dressed in the height of Edwardian fashion, with an elegant gown and intricately beaded neckline, Clarissa embodies the grace and sophistication of the deb world in the summer of 1915. Born Clarissa Madeleine Georgiana Felicite Tennant in 1896, she was the daughter of the 1st Baron Glenconner. She was one of the last debutantes to be presented at court before the outbreak of the Great War, which would soon interrupt the grand traditions of high society. Clarissa's life was marked by a series of notable marriages. Her first husband was Adrian Bethell, whom she married in 1915. Their union was short-lived, and they were divorced just three years later. In 1920, Clarissa married Major Lionel Tennyson, and their union produced two children. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 1932. Finally, in 1935, Clarissa married James Beck, with whom she spent the remainder of her life. Throughout her life, Clarissa was known for her exceptional beauty. Barbara Cartland, the famous romance novelist, once described her as "the most beautiful woman I had ever seen." This portrait captures a fleeting moment of stillness and introspection in the midst of Clarissa's eventful life, making it a poignant and captivating glimpse into the past. This photograph is a testament to the elegance and allure of the deb world in the early 20th century, and it serves as a reminder of the rich history and traditions that continue to fascinate us today.
