Born in Savoy, Martin rose to prominence as a military officer in the French army, serving in Europe, India, and the Middle East. However, his life took an unexpected turn when he was appointed as the governor of the French colony at Pondicherry in India in 1774. During his time in India, Martin was struck by the plight of orphaned children, many of whom were left destitute after the French defeat in the Seven Years' War. Moved by compassion, he established the La Martiniere Children's Colony in Lyon, France, in 1792, providing education and shelter to over 2,000 children. The colony, which still exists today, became a model for educational institutions around the world, emphasizing discipline, hard work, and moral values. Martin's legacy extended beyond education, as he also played a significant role in the development of the French colonial empire. He was instrumental in the construction of the famous Danish Fort Marion in Pondicherry, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
