1820 Clusius Curtis Greater Weddell Soldanella

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Clusius Greater Soldanella, Soldanella clusii, a rare and beautiful alpine flower. The illustration was drawn by the renowned botanical artist John Curtis and meticulously engraved by Weddell for the Curtis's Botanical Magazine, published in Walworth, London, in the year 1820. The Clusius Greater Soldanella is a member of the Primulaceae family, native to the European Alps and the Carpathian Mountains. This delicate plant is characterized by its rosette of ovate-lanceolate leaves and its distinctive bell-shaped, white to pinkish-purple flowers, which bloom in late spring. The history of this plant's discovery and documentation is an intriguing one. It was first described by the famous botanist and explorer Carl Linnaeus in 1753, who named it Soldanella clusii in honor of the Austrian botanist and collector, Leopold Clusius. However, it was not until 1818 that this plant was first successfully cultivated in England, thanks to the efforts of the Royal Horticultural Society and its curator, William Townsend Aiton. This stunning illustration captures the essence of the Clusius Greater Soldanella's ethereal beauty and serves as a testament to the remarkable achievements of the botanical community during the early 19th century. The intricate details of the plant's veins, petals, and leaves are brought to life through the skillful use of hand-coloring, making this a truly captivating work of art and a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
