EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene of an unexpected event at the Birchington Sports Day in 1918. Two wounded soldiers, patients of the Quex Park VAD Hospital and its annexe at St. Michaels, participate in an event called "Cock Fighting." The Sports Day was organized by the hospital to raise funds for the Birchington War Depot, which supplied essential articles to the local hospitals. The event, number 6 on the programme, took place at the Woodford House School field, drawing a large crowd of local people. The Quex Park VAD Hospital had opened on October 15, 1914, and was run by the Birchington Detachment, with Hannah Powell-Cotton serving as Commandant. Her husband, Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, was the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, responsible for transporting patients from the stations to the hospitals. Despite the challenging circumstances of war, the community came together to support each other, as evidenced by this unique and intriguing moment at the Sports Day. The event raised a total of 8 shillings and 14 pence for the War Depot.
