EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century illustration, Plate 70 from the Loten Collection of coloured drawings, features the vibrant and enchanting Coracias benghalensis, or the Indian Roller, in stunning detail. Painted by the renowned Flemish artist Pieter Cornelius de Bevere between 1754 and 1757, this artwork showcases the bird's captivating blue plumage, perched gracefully on a cream, green, and brown branch adorned with delicate angiosperms, or flowering plants. The Indian Roller is a member of the Coraciidae family, which belongs to the larger group of Angiospermae, or flowering plants, and Magnoliophyta, or flowering plants with seeds. This bird is native to the Indian subcontinent and is commonly found near open grasslands, savannas, and marshes. The Indian Roller is known for its distinctive appearance and unique hunting technique. It flies low over the ground, with its wings in a distinctive "V" shape, and stuns its prey by swooping down and hitting the ground with its wings. The bird's diet consists primarily of insects, reptiles, and amphibians. The Loten Collection of coloured drawings, which includes this illustration, was compiled by the Dutch naturalist and physician Joan Gideon Loten between 1722 and 1781. Loten was a dedicated naturalist and collector, and his collection is now an invaluable resource for researchers and scholars studying the natural history of the Indian subcontinent during the 18th century. This beautiful illustration by Pieter Cornelius de Bevere is a testament to the artistic and scientific achievements of the 18th century, and a reminder of the rich natural heritage of the Indian subcontinent.
