EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning illustration on Page 148 of W.H. Houghton's "British Freshwater Fishes," published in 1879, showcases three distinct species of freshwater fish native to Europe: Coregonus vandesius, Coregonus clupeoides, and Thymallus vulgaris. The first fish depicted is the European Whitefish (Coregonus vandesius), a bony fish belonging to the salmonid family and characterized by its elongated body, olive-green back, and silvery sides. Whitefish are typically found in cold, clear waters and are an important food source for both humans and wildlife. The second fish illustrated is the Coregonus clupeoides, also known as the Grayling or Three-spined Stickleback. This small, slender fish is easily identified by its distinctive black lateral stripe and three spines in its dorsal fin. Grayling are often found in shallow, well-oxygenated waters and feed primarily on plankton and small invertebrates. Lastly, the Thymallus vulgaris, or the European Grayling, is depicted in this illustration. This salmonid fish is easily recognized by its large, colorful dorsal and tail fins, as well as its distinctive black spots on its sides. European Grayling are typically found in clear, fast-flowing rivers and streams and feed on a diet of insects and other aquatic invertebrates. These three fish species are depicted in their natural habitat, outside, during daytime hours. The intricate details of their scales, fins, and other features are beautifully captured in this painting, making it a valuable historical record of these fascinating freshwater fish species.
