EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a pivotal moment during the coronation of King George V at Westminster Abbey in London on the 22nd of June, 1911. The King, having shed his regal robe at the hands of the Lord Great Chamberlain, sits humbly in the ancient Chair of St. Edward. Four Knights of the Garter hold aloft a rich canopy, shielding the monarch from the gaze of the vast crowd. The solemnity of the scene intensifies as the Dean of Westminster approaches with the eagle-shaped Ampulla, containing the sacred oil. With the Archbishop of Canterbury, the King is anointed in the form of a cross, first on the crown of his head, and then on the palms of both hands. This anointing, an essential part of the coronation ceremony, symbolizes the monarch's atonement and consecration to his role as the spiritual and temporal leader of the realm. The coronation of King George V was a significant event in British history, marking the beginning of a new era for the monarchy. The ceremony, steeped in tradition and symbolism, served to remind the people of the sacred bond between their monarch and their faith, as well as their shared history and heritage.
