EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored lithograph depicts a 17th century peasant woman from France, as rendered from a print by Jean de Saint-Jean. The image is part of "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), a seminal work on historical fashion published in Paris in 1867. The book was a continuation of an earlier series on costumes from the 12th to 15th centuries, published by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri. The meticulously detailed illustration was created by the artist and book illustrator Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard, and lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie. Lechevallier-Chevignard was a prolific artist, interior designer, and professor at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris. He was known for his intricate and accurate depictions of historical costumes and interiors. The peasant woman in the print wears a simple yet elegant costume typical of rural France during the 17th century. Her high-waisted, full skirt is adorned with intricate embroidery and a pattern of red and green checks. A white apron covers her front, and a red shawl is draped around her shoulders. Her blouse is simple and white, with a high neckline and long sleeves. She wears a black headscarf, and her hair is styled in loose curls. The print offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and lifestyle of rural France during the 17th century, and is a testament to the meticulous research and artistic skill of its creators. It remains an important historical record and a beautiful work of art in its own right.
