Countess Curzon & Princess Helena Victoria making clothes fo

Lady Curzon and Princess Helena Victoria of Schlewig-Holstein - just two of the numerous workers in the YMCA work-rooms at Hertford Street seen at their sewing machines making under-garments for soldiers during the First World War. Lady Curzon was Mrs Alfred Duggan, born Grace Elvina Hinds (1879-1958), daughter of Mr. Monroe Hinds, and the second wife of George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Baron Curzon of Kedleston. Princess Helena Victoria was the elder daughter of Princess Helena (Christian) and therefore a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from 1917, Countess Curzon, née Grace Elvina Hinds, and Princess Helena Victoria of Schlewig-Holstein are captured at their sewing machines in the YMCA work-rooms at Hertford Street, London. Both women, dressed in simple, practical attire, are deeply engrossed in their tasks, contributing to the war effort by making essential under-garments for soldiers serving on the front lines during World War I. Lady Curzon, the second wife of George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Baron Curzon of Kedleston, was the daughter of Monroe Hinds. Her noble status and refined upbringing contrast sharply with the humble surroundings of the work-rooms, underscoring the collective spirit and selflessness of the women who dedicated their time and skills to this noble cause. Princess Helena Victoria, the elder daughter of Princess Helena of Schlewig-Holstein and a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, also lends her support to the initiative. The image of these two prominent figures working side by side with their fellow volunteers showcases the unity and determination of the British people during the Great War. The needle and thread served as a powerful symbol of hope and resilience, as the women of the YMCA, including aristocrats and commoners alike, came together to provide comfort and support to the soldiers in uniform. This poignant photograph is a testament to the enduring spirit of community and the indomitable resolve of the British people during a time of great adversity.
