1580 1663 Anthony Brydges Countess Dijk Dyke Exeter Frances

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative portrait, the Countess of Exeter, Frances Brydges (1580-1663), is depicted in all her regal splendor. Dressed in the finest fabrics of the late Elizabethan era, her elegant gown, adorned with intricate lace and embroidery, speaks to her noble status. Her dark, expressive eyes are framed by long, curled lashes and her chestnut hair is piled high atop her head, held in place by an ornate headdress. The Countess of Exeter was the wife of Thomas, 1st Earl of Exeter, a prominent figure in English politics during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. Frances, the daughter of Sir John Brydges and Katherine Fitton, was known for her beauty and intelligence, making her a valuable asset in the court of Elizabeth I. After her husband's death in 1604, she continued to play an active role in political affairs, serving as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Anne of Denmark and later to Queen Henrietta Maria. This portrait, likely painted between 1580 and 1663, captures the essence of the Countess of Exeter's grace and elegance. The artist, unknown to us today, expertly rendered the delicate folds of her gown, the subtle shading of her features, and the intricate details of her headdress. The backdrop of the portrait, a rich tapestry of deep reds and golds, adds to the overall sense of opulence and grandeur. The Countess of Exeter's life was marked by tragedy as well as triumph. She outlived her husband by more than six decades and was the mother of ten children, several of whom predeceased her. Despite these losses, she remained a prominent figure in English society until her death in 1663. This portrait serves as a testament to her enduring legacy and the beauty and elegance of the Elizabethan era.
