This exquisite work of art showcases a long-grey Crateropus species, a passerine bird belonging to the order Sauropsida and the class Aves. The Sauropsida class includes reptiles and birds, reflecting the ancient belief that birds evolved from reptiles. The Crateropus, depicted here in its deceased state, is a member of the Passeriformes order, which includes over half of all known bird species. Pieter Cornelis de Bevere, the artist, was a renowned Flemish naturalist and painter, born in Antwerp in 1710.
